Not Sure If Telemedicine Is Right for You?

Quick Symptom Checker

Answer a few quick questions and we'll help you decide if a telemedicine visit is the best fit — or if you should come in person or call 911. Takes about 30 seconds.

Step 1 of 4

Are you experiencing any of these right now?

If yes, telemedicine is NOT appropriate — please call 911 or go to the nearest ER.

Step 2 of 4

What's your main health concern today?

Select the one that best matches your situation.

Step 3 of 4

Do you need hands-on care?

Some issues need a physical exam, lab work, imaging, or in-office procedures.

Step 4 of 4

Are you currently located in Massachusetts?

Telemedicine services are limited to patients physically located in Massachusetts at the time of the visit.

Telemedicine Is a Great Fit

Based on your answers, your concern can likely be handled by a telemedicine visit from the comfort of your home. Our licensed providers can evaluate your symptoms, prescribe medications when appropriate, and follow up as needed.

What to do next

In-Person Visit Recommended

Based on your answers, you'd likely benefit from an in-person visit at our urgent care clinic. We can do a thorough physical exam, run any needed tests, and provide hands-on care. Walk-ins are welcome at both our Woburn and Lynn locations.

What to do next

Walk in to either clinic during open hours, or call ahead to confirm wait times. We're open 7 days a week.

Telemedicine Limited to MA Residents

Our telemedicine service is only available to patients currently located in Massachusetts. If you're visiting MA, you're welcome to come in-person to either of our urgent care clinics. Otherwise, please contact a local provider in your area.

If you're in Massachusetts

Walk-ins are welcome at our Woburn and Lynn clinics, 7 days a week.

What You'll Need

Setting up for a telemedicine visit is simple. Here's everything you need to have ready before connecting with your provider.

Any Device

Smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone — no app download needed.

Internet Connection

A stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection — most modern home networks work great.

Quiet, Private Space

A well-lit room where you can speak openly about your health without interruptions.

Government-Issued Photo ID

Required to verify your identity at the start of every visit. Have your insurance card and payment method ready too.

Massachusetts location required. Per Massachusetts state law and the limits of Dr. Patel's medical license, you must be physically located in Massachusetts at the time of your telehealth visit. You'll be asked to confirm your location at the start of every visit. We are unable to provide care if you are outside Massachusetts — even temporarily.

Tips to Prepare

A little preparation goes a long way. These tips will help you have a smooth, productive visit with your provider.

1

Write down your symptoms

Note when they started, how often they happen, and what makes them better or worse.

2

List your medications

Include prescriptions, over-the-counter meds, vitamins, and supplements with doses.

3

Have your pharmacy info ready

Know the name and location of your preferred pharmacy so we can send prescriptions directly.

4

Test your camera & mic

Join 5 minutes early to make sure your video and audio work properly.

5

Prepare your questions

Write down anything you want to ask — it's easy to forget once the visit starts.

6

Take basic measurements

If you have a thermometer, blood pressure cuff, or scale at home, have recent readings handy.

Transparent Policies

Our Telehealth Policies

Clear, upfront information about what we prescribe, how we communicate, our cancellation policy, and what happens if your visit doesn't go as planned.

Prescription Policy

What we can prescribe:

  • Antibiotics for common infections
  • Routine medication refills
  • Allergy & asthma medications
  • Mental health medications (non-controlled)

What we cannot prescribe via telehealth:

  • Schedule II controlled substances (opioids, ADHD stimulants, etc.)
  • Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, Valium)
  • Medical marijuana certifications
  • Medications requiring an in-person exam by law

Cancellation Policy

We ask for as much notice as possible so we can offer your slot to another patient who needs care.

  • Cancel 2+ hours before: No charge
  • Late cancellation (under 2 hours): $25 fee
  • No-show / missed visit: $50 fee
  • Cancel via patient portal, phone, or our automated text reminder

Fees may be waived for emergencies — call our office if circumstances change.

How We Communicate

For your security, we use specific channels for different types of communication.

HIPAA-secure channels:

  • Patient portal messages
  • Live video visits via Athena
  • Phone calls from our office

Do NOT send health information via:

  • Regular email
  • Text message (except secure portal links)
  • Social media

Recording Policy

Telehealth visits are not routinely recorded for privacy reasons. If recording is needed for any reason (such as quality review), we will obtain your explicit consent first.

Per Massachusetts state law (two-party consent), patients may not record telehealth visits without our written consent. Recording without consent may be a violation of state law.

If the Connection Drops

Technology happens. Here's what we do if your visit is interrupted:

  • We'll try to reconnect via the same video link first
  • If we can't reconnect, we'll call you at your phone number on file
  • We can finish your visit by phone if needed
  • If we cannot reach you within 15 minutes, the visit will be rescheduled at no charge

Continuation of Care

If you need follow-up care after your telehealth visit:

  • Your provider will recommend the appropriate next step
  • We can schedule a follow-up telehealth or in-person visit
  • Records can be sent to your primary care provider
  • Specialist referrals are coordinated through our office

A copy of your visit summary is always available in your patient portal.

Important Disclaimers About Telehealth

By using our telemedicine services, you understand and agree to the following:

  • Telehealth has limitations. Some conditions cannot be diagnosed or treated remotely and may require in-person evaluation.
  • Standard of care. We provide telehealth care that meets the same standard as in-person care, in accordance with Massachusetts state law and federal telehealth guidelines.
  • Provider-patient relationship. A provider-patient relationship begins only at your first telehealth visit, not when you book an appointment.
  • Technology risks. Video and audio communications carry inherent risks including connection failures, interruptions, and (in rare cases) privacy breaches. We use HIPAA-compliant platforms to minimize these risks.
  • Your provider may end the visit. If your provider determines that telehealth is not appropriate for your situation, they will direct you to in-person care, urgent care, or an emergency department.
  • Federal compliance. Our telehealth services comply with HHS, CMS, and HIPAA federal regulations.

For full details, see our Telehealth Terms & Disclaimers page.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our telemedicine service.

Telemedicine is a way to receive medical care remotely using secure video. Our telemedicine visits connect you with the same licensed providers from our Lynn and Woburn locations — without coming into the clinic.

Click "Book An Appointment" at the top of this page, visit our locations page, or call us at +1 781-404-6172 (Woburn) or +1 781-281-7081 (Lynn). Same-day appointments are often available.

All you need is a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and a quiet private space. You'll receive a secure link in your confirmation email — no app download required.

Most major insurance plans now cover telemedicine, including BCBS, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, Medicare, MassHealth, Harvard Pilgrim, and Tufts. We'll verify your coverage when you book.

Yes. If your provider determines a prescription is appropriate, it will be sent electronically to the pharmacy of your choice. Note that certain controlled substances cannot be prescribed via telemedicine under federal law.

Absolutely. Our telemedicine platform is fully HIPAA-compliant and end-to-end encrypted. Your medical information is treated with the same confidentiality as an in-person visit.

If your provider determines you need a physical exam, lab work, or imaging, they'll direct you to our Lynn or Woburn clinic, an emergency room, or another appropriate facility. Continuity of care is built in.

Most telemedicine visits last 10–20 minutes, depending on the complexity of your concern. We never rush — you'll get the time you need with your provider.

If you have trouble connecting, our team will call you to troubleshoot or convert your visit to a phone consultation so you don't miss your appointment.

If your provider prescribes medication during the visit, it's sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy in real time. Most prescriptions are ready for pickup within an hour. Just have your pharmacy's name and location ready when you book your visit.

Yes. After your visit, a complete visit summary — including your diagnosis, treatment plan, and any prescriptions or follow-up instructions — is available in your patient portal. You can also request a copy sent to your primary care provider for continuity of care.

Yes. Cancel 2+ hours before your visit at no charge via the patient portal or by calling our office. Late cancellations (under 2 hours) are $25, and no-shows are $50. We may waive fees in emergencies — please call us.

No. Per federal law (Ryan Haight Act and DEA telehealth restrictions), we cannot prescribe Schedule II controlled substances (opioids, ADHD stimulants like Adderall/Ritalin) or benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, Valium) via telehealth. If you need ongoing treatment for these conditions, you'll need to be seen in person — either at our office or by an appropriate specialist. We can prescribe most other medications, including antibiotics, refills of non-controlled prescriptions, and many mental health medications.

Yes — our telehealth services are available to patients age 3 and older. Children under 3 years old should not be treated via telemedicine and require in-person evaluation by a pediatric provider. For patients ages 3-17, a parent or legal guardian must be present during the entire telehealth visit, provide consent, and assist with the visit. Please have your child's medical records, current medications, and immunization history ready.

Unfortunately, we can only provide telehealth services to patients physically located in Massachusetts at the time of the visit. This is due to state medical licensing laws — Dr. Patel is licensed only in Massachusetts. If you're temporarily outside MA, please contact a local provider in your current state, use a national telehealth service, or wait until you return to MA.

At the start of every telehealth visit, your provider will ask to see a government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, state ID) to confirm your identity. This protects you from fraud and ensures we're treating the right person. Please have your ID ready before connecting to your visit.

No. Under Massachusetts state law (two-party consent), neither the patient nor the provider may record a telehealth visit without the other's explicit written consent. If you'd like a record of what was discussed, please request your visit summary from the patient portal — it includes diagnoses, treatment plans, and any prescriptions. If you have a specific reason to need a recording (such as for a family member or caregiver), please ask your provider in advance and we'll discuss options.

If you're experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) immediately. 988 is free, confidential, and available 24/7. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911. While we can provide ongoing mental health support for stable conditions like anxiety and depression via telehealth, an active crisis requires immediate, specialized intervention that telehealth cannot replace.

Yes. Our telehealth visits run on athenahealth's HIPAA-compliant platform with end-to-end encryption. We've signed a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with athenahealth that legally binds them to HIPAA standards. We do not use Zoom, FaceTime, Skype, or similar consumer apps for medical visits — those are not HIPAA-compliant. For your security, please use the official telehealth link we send you, not third-party software.
