Setting up for a telemedicine visit is simple. Here's everything you need to have ready before connecting with your provider.
Smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone — no app download needed.
A stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection — most modern home networks work great.
A well-lit room where you can speak openly about your health without interruptions.
Required to verify your identity at the start of every visit. Have your insurance card and payment method ready too.
Massachusetts location required. Per Massachusetts state law and the limits of Dr. Patel's medical license, you must be physically located in Massachusetts at the time of your telehealth visit. You'll be asked to confirm your location at the start of every visit. We are unable to provide care if you are outside Massachusetts — even temporarily.
A little preparation goes a long way. These tips will help you have a smooth, productive visit with your provider.
Note when they started, how often they happen, and what makes them better or worse.
Include prescriptions, over-the-counter meds, vitamins, and supplements with doses.
Know the name and location of your preferred pharmacy so we can send prescriptions directly.
Join 5 minutes early to make sure your video and audio work properly.
Write down anything you want to ask — it's easy to forget once the visit starts.
If you have a thermometer, blood pressure cuff, or scale at home, have recent readings handy.
Telemedicine works well for many common conditions — but some situations require hands-on examination, in-person testing, or emergency care. If you're experiencing any of the following, please visit our urgent care location, see your primary care provider in person, or call 911.

Telehealth visits are not routinely recorded for privacy reasons. If recording is needed for any reason (such as quality review), we will obtain your explicit consent first.
Per Massachusetts state law (two-party consent), patients may not record telehealth visits without our written consent. Recording without consent may be a violation of state law.
Technology happens. Here's what we do if your visit is interrupted:
If you need follow-up care after your telehealth visit:

Most major insurance plans now cover telemedicine, including BCBS, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, Medicare, MassHealth, Harvard Pilgrim, and Tufts. We'll verify your coverage when you book.
Yes. If your provider determines a prescription is appropriate, it will be sent electronically to the pharmacy of your choice. Note that certain controlled substances cannot be prescribed via telemedicine under federal law.
Absolutely. Our telemedicine platform is fully HIPAA-compliant and end-to-end encrypted. Your medical information is treated with the same confidentiality as an in-person visit.
If your provider determines you need a physical exam, lab work, or imaging, they'll direct you to our Lynn or Woburn clinic, an emergency room, or another appropriate facility. Continuity of care is built in.
Most telemedicine visits last 10–20 minutes, depending on the complexity of your concern. We never rush — you'll get the time you need with your provider.
If you have trouble connecting, our team will call you to troubleshoot or convert your visit to a phone consultation so you don't miss your appointment.
If your provider prescribes medication during the visit, it's sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy in real time. Most prescriptions are ready for pickup within an hour. Just have your pharmacy's name and location ready when you book your visit.
Yes. After your visit, a complete visit summary — including your diagnosis, treatment plan, and any prescriptions or follow-up instructions — is available in your patient portal. You can also request a copy sent to your primary care provider for continuity of care.
Yes. Cancel 2+ hours before your visit at no charge via the patient portal or by calling our office. Late cancellations (under 2 hours) are $25, and no-shows are $50. We may waive fees in emergencies — please call us.
No. Per federal law (Ryan Haight Act and DEA telehealth restrictions), we cannot prescribe Schedule II controlled substances (opioids, ADHD stimulants like Adderall/Ritalin) or benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, Valium) via telehealth. If you need ongoing treatment for these conditions, you'll need to be seen in person — either at our office or by an appropriate specialist. We can prescribe most other medications, including antibiotics, refills of non-controlled prescriptions, and many mental health medications.
Yes — our telehealth services are available to patients age 3 and older. Children under 3 years old should not be treated via telemedicine and require in-person evaluation by a pediatric provider. For patients ages 3-17, a parent or legal guardian must be present during the entire telehealth visit, provide consent, and assist with the visit. Please have your child's medical records, current medications, and immunization history ready.
Unfortunately, we can only provide telehealth services to patients physically located in Massachusetts at the time of the visit. This is due to state medical licensing laws — Dr. Patel is licensed only in Massachusetts. If you're temporarily outside MA, please contact a local provider in your current state, use a national telehealth service, or wait until you return to MA.
At the start of every telehealth visit, your provider will ask to see a government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, state ID) to confirm your identity. This protects you from fraud and ensures we're treating the right person. Please have your ID ready before connecting to your visit.
No. Under Massachusetts state law (two-party consent), neither the patient nor the provider may record a telehealth visit without the other's explicit written consent. If you'd like a record of what was discussed, please request your visit summary from the patient portal — it includes diagnoses, treatment plans, and any prescriptions. If you have a specific reason to need a recording (such as for a family member or caregiver), please ask your provider in advance and we'll discuss options.
If you're experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) immediately. 988 is free, confidential, and available 24/7. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911. While we can provide ongoing mental health support for stable conditions like anxiety and depression via telehealth, an active crisis requires immediate, specialized intervention that telehealth cannot replace.
Yes. Our telehealth visits run on athenahealth's HIPAA-compliant platform with end-to-end encryption. We've signed a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with athenahealth that legally binds them to HIPAA standards. We do not use Zoom, FaceTime, Skype, or similar consumer apps for medical visits — those are not HIPAA-compliant. For your security, please use the official telehealth link we send you, not third-party software.
